The Monkey's Paw By W.W.Jacob

It's one of the most scary Stories ever. It was banned to be publicized in Arab countries .. Hope you Enjoy it's first Chapter

First Chapter

I

WITHOUT, the night was cold and wet, but in the small parlour of Laburnam Villa the blinds were drawn and the fire burned brightly. Father and son were at chess, the former, who possessed ideas about the game involving radical changes, putting his king into such sharp and unnecessary perils that it even provoked comment from the white-haired old lady knitting placidly by the fire.
"Hark at the wind," said Mr. White, who, having seen a fatal mistake after it was too late, was amiably desirous of preventing his son from seeing it.
"I'm listening," said the latter, grimly surveying the board as he stretched out his hand. "Check."
"I should hardly think that he'd come to-night," said his father, with his hand poised over the board.
"Mate," replied the son.
"That's the worst of living so far out," bawled Mr. White, with sudden and unlooked-for violence; "of all the beastly, slushy, out-of-the-way places to live in, this is the worst. Pathway's a bog, and the road's a torrent. I don't know what people are thinking about. I suppose because only two houses on the road are let, they think it doesn't matter."
"Never mind, dear," said his wife soothingly; "perhaps you'll win the next one."
Mr. White looked up sharply, just in time to intercept a knowing glance between mother and son. The words died away on his lips, and he hid a guilty grin in his thin grey beard.
"There he is," said Herbert White, as the gate banged to loudly and heavy footsteps came toward the door.
The old man rose with hospitable haste, and opening the door, was heard condoling with the new arrival. The new arrival also condoled with himself, so that Mrs. White said, "Tut, tut!" and coughed gently as her husband entered the room, followed by a tall burly man, beady of eye and rubicund of visage.
"Sergeant-Major Morris," he said, introducing him.
The sergeant-major shook hands, and taking the proffered seat by the fire, watched contentedly while his host got out whisky and tumblers and stood a small copper kettle on the fire.
At the third glass his eyes got brighter, and he began to talk, the little family circle regarding with eager interest this visitor from distant parts, as he squared his broad shoulders in the chair and spoke of strange scenes and doughty deeds; of wars and plagues and strange peoples.
"Twenty-one years of it," said Mr. White, nodding at his wife and son. "When he went away he was a slip of a youth in the warehouse. Now look at him."
"He don't look to have taken much harm," said Mrs. White, politely.
"I'd like to go to India myself," said the old man, "just to look round a bit, you know."
"Better where you are," said the sergeant-major, shaking his head. He put down the empty glass, and sighing softly, shook it again.
"I should like to see those old temples and fakirs and jugglers," said the old man. "What was that you started telling me the other day about a monkey's paw or something, Morris?"
"Nothing," said the soldier hastily. "Leastways, nothing worth hearing."
"Monkey's paw?" said Mrs. White curiously.
"Well, it's just a bit of what you might call magic, perhaps," said the sergeant-major off-handedly.
His three listeners leaned forward eagerly. The visitor absentmindedly put his empty glass to his lips and then set it down again. His host filled it for him.
"To look at," said the sergeant-major, fumbling in his pocket, "it's just an ordinary little paw, dried to a mummy."
He took something out of his pocket and proffered it. Mrs. White drew back with a grimace, but her son, taking it, examined it curiously.
"And what is there special about it?" inquired Mr. White, as he took it from his son and, having examined it, placed it upon the table.
"It had a spell put on it by an old fakir," said the sergeant-major, "a very holy man. He wanted to show that fate ruled people's lives, and that those who interfered with it did so to their sorrow. He put a spell on it so that three separate men could each have three wishes from it."
His manner was so impressive that his hearers were conscious that their light laughter jarred somewhat.
"Well, why don't you have three, sir?" said Herbert White cleverly.
The soldier regarded him in the way that middle age is wont to regard presumptuous youth. "I have," he said quietly, and his blotchy face whitened.
"And did you really have the three wishes granted?" asked Mrs. White.
"I did," said the sergeant-major, and his glass tapped against his strong teeth.
"And has anybody else wished?" inquired the old lady.
"The first man had his three wishes, yes," was the reply. "I don't know what the first two were, but the third was for death. That's how I got the paw."
His tones were so grave that a hush fell upon the group.
"If you've had your three wishes, it's no good to you now, then, Morris," said the old man at last. "What do you keep it for?"
The soldier shook his head. "Fancy, I suppose," he said slowly.
"If you could have another three wishes," said the old man, eyeing him keenly, "would you have them?"
"I don't know," said the other. "I don't know."
He took the paw, and dangling it between his front finger and thumb, suddenly threw it upon the fire. White, with a slight cry, stooped down and snatched it off.
"Better let it burn," said the soldier solemnly.
"If you don't want it, Morris," said the old man, "give it to me."
"I won't," said his friend doggedly. "I threw it on the fire. If you keep it, don't blame me for what happens. Pitch it on the fire again, like a sensible man."
The other shook his head and examined his new possession closely. "How do you do it?" he inquired.
"Hold it up in your right hand and wish aloud,' said the sergeant-major, "but I warn you of the consequences."
"Sounds like the Arabian Nights," said Mrs White, as she rose and began to set the supper. "Don't you think you might wish for four pairs of hands for me?"
Her husband drew the talisman from his pocket and then all three burst into laughter as the sergeant-major, with a look of alarm on his face, caught him by the arm.
"If you must wish," he said gruffly, "wish for something sensible."
Mr. White dropped it back into his pocket, and placing chairs, motioned his friend to the table. In the business of supper the talisman was partly forgotten, and afterward the three sat listening in an enthralled fashion to a second instalment of the soldier's adventures in India.
"If the tale about the monkey paw is not more truthful than those he has been telling us," said Herbert, as the door closed behind their guest, just in time for him to catch the last train, "we shan't make much out of it."
"Did you give him anything for it, father?" inquired Mrs. White, regarding her husband closely.
"A trifle," said he, colouring slightly. "He didn't want it, but I made him take it. And he pressed me again to throw it away."
"Likely," said Herbert, with pretended horror. "Why, we're going to be rich, and famous, and happy. Wish to be an emperor, father, to begin with; then you can't be henpecked."
He darted round the table, pursued by the maligned Mrs. White armed with an antimacassar.
Mr. White took the paw from his pocket and eyed it dubiously. "I don't know what to wish for, and that's a fact," he said slowly. "It seems to me I've got all I want."
"If you only cleared the house, you'd be quite happy, wouldn't you?" said Herbert, with his hand on his shoulder. "Well, wish for two hundred pounds, then; that'll just do it."
His father, smiling shamefacedly at his own credulity, held up the talisman, as his son, with a solemn face somewhat marred by a wink at his mother, sat down at the piano and struck a few impressive chords.
"I wish for two hundred pounds," said the old man distinctly.
A fine crash from the piano greeted the words, interrupted by a shuddering cry from the old man. His wife and son ran toward him.
"It moved, he cried, with a glance of disgust at the object as it lay on the floor. "As I wished it twisted in my hands like a snake."
"Well, I don't see the money," said his son, as he picked it up and placed it on the table, "and I bet I never shall."
"It must have been your fancy, father," said his wife, regarding him anxiously.
He shook his head. "Never mind, though; there's no harm done, but it gave me a shock all the same."
They sat down by the fire again while the two men finished their pipes. Outside, the wind was higher than ever, and the old man started nervously at the sound of a door banging upstairs. A silence unusual and depressing settled upon all three, which lasted until the old couple rose to retire for the night.
"I expect you'll find the cash tied up in a big bag in the middle of your bed," said Herbert, as he bade them good-night, "and something horrible squatting up on top of the wardrobe watching you as you pocket your ill-gotten gains."
He sat alone in the darkness, gazing at the dying fire, and seeing faces in it. The last face was so horrible and so simian that he gazed at it in amazement. It got so vivid that, with a little uneasy laugh, he felt on the table for a glass containing a little water to throw over it. His hand grasped the monkey's paw, and with a little shiver he wiped his hand on his coat and went up to bed

Before It's Too Late

Before It's Too Late
Thoughts
Some people might spend most of their lives in search of friendship .. The true personification of fidelity and sincerity .. Albeit they might Depart life without feeling the warmth of such means of human interaction .. Fortunatel,I was one of those who enjoyed being accompanied by such
faithful friends
When time goes by,One realizes how fool would he be when he conceals his actual feelings towards his beloved one .. including friends & lovers .. He was my best friend. And Allah knows that I never hesitated to reveal how he means to me .. But time proves that you're not always right
Once we decided to go for some soccer .. We were ranging from 8 to 10 .. Everything was going so fine .. Getting enthusiastic .. The match was going so cool .. Then it happened .. He wanted to perform the famous double kick move .. Forgetting that we were playing on an asphalt ground .. He leaps, tries to kick the ball with his foot. But he misses the ball which makes him take a whole circle in the air before his back head hits the solid ground with a deep sound of the impact .. Moments of sudden shock overwhelms our minds .. We're shocked to the extent that we didn't respond expeditiously .. We try to revive him .. Feeling nervous,we slap him on the face .. Acting like crazy .. We carry him into the car, pushing the gas pedal trying to find a nearby hosbital .. The clock ticks, loading with anxious tension and killing discomposure .. Finally, The Doctor comes out saying that he's gonna be ok , he's just going through a comma. But he's ok.You can see him when he regain his consciousness .. A salty taste goes down my lips, My eye-lids falls in front of this spate of tears .. He's ok ,and I'm grateful for that bless .. All credit goes to The Almighty
Sometimes I feel I'd be very sorry if I didn't let him know how a good friend he was .. And how much he means to me .. I've learned never to conceal my feelings any more .. Take it off your chest to the one whom you think he deserves your love .. Coz who knows? It could be too late when you think it's the perfect time
Don't ever hide your feelings within .. Speak it out .. Let the people you love know that they'll never be appreciated by any one as you do
Never infanticide your feelings .. Emancipate your hearts from your mental slavery

A Matter Of Time

It's A Matter Of Time
Personal Experience

Hey,how are you?I hope you are ok.Well.......I don't know how to say it,but you addressed my frankness and asked me to be honest with you,so you must let me get this off my chest.Iam pretty sure of your awareness of how much you are important to me,and that is what made me decide to tell you the truth.******,we aren't destined for each other, time isn't in our side.I mean c'mon for God's sake, what did you think my answer would be??Open your eyes and look around, time isn't the same,we are no more living in the age of Romeo and Julliet, your proplem is that your are a dreamy character.Iam sorry if it can't work out between us,maybe in another world,in a perfect one.And as I said, time is our enemy, and you know that there is nothing we can do about it.Iam happy for having you as a friend, and proud of it.Besides time can make you forget, just live your life and let him finish his job, believe me".........She says with a winning smile.

Time.....it's always about time.Whenever you face a problem, you can lay it on your eternal friend, time.Time makes you love, but it can't unite you with your beloved ones.Time seems to be the only refuge for those who have lost any hope of falling in love again. It's your friend,it's your enemy,it's your doctor, and it's even your shelter when you need a one.But remember, don't ever trust him,for he is always ready to stab you in the back whenever it's possible.Oh God,I remember now how much I wept that day.But now,the new me,wonders what made me shed my tears in such a comic way.No wonder then we can fall, live, triumph and create life out of life.Time is our enemy, but only smart people can make an ally out of him.So be smart enough to live your life to the fullest, learn of your mistakes and never look back.your life is just like a shot bullet, but your capable of controlling it,so don't let it miss the mark.

And remember......it's a matter of time

Taboo

Excerpts From My Imagination's Realm

1

He whoever approach this place shall be Cursed for all eternity .. The elder mentions .. My friends try their best to conceal their sniggers .. The Elder goes on "No One ever had the guts to unleash the darkness inside this place, believe me young men ,My earlier fathers have told me that they had encountered It" .. "Just keep away"....But we had another plan for
spending the night .. How fool we were .. Wish we had reconsidered the Elder's advice

2

This is a haunted place, Do you know what does it mean to be haunted? It the dwelling of demons and ghosts, don't you fear ghosts? .. You should never play around this place .. Mom has always told me this as a child .. But I've always had this infinite desire to unveil such mysterious secrets .. I had the passion to know more .. It never stopped me as a child .. Gaining more than what I ever expected .. Satisfying my curiosity .. So I decided add another page to my diaries by stepping in .. a human chill goes over my spine as the door creaks ...... And I'm In

3

It's all about that Palace .. A deserted Palace.. .. And since I've been brought up injected with this intrinsic fear of that place, It was the last thing I'd ever think to pay a visit .. Few we were..A miniature gang I'd rather to call my companions .. But you know how young boys evaluate someone's bravery.. Oh God damn those young devils .. I was the chosen one.. A handful of rumors go around that place .. Tonight,I'm putting them to the test.....A rope, knif, flash light and few sandwichs what else would I need .. All what I'm asked to prove will be unleashed once I spend a single night .. All alone

4

Actually .. Demons would be the last thing to frighten me .. My imagination seeks much more creative obsessions to shake my world .. I've always dealt with this mysterious world of spirituals as we should never unveil its secrets .. We should never interfere such abnormal activities .. Some doors are meant to be sealed for a good reason .. And I believe there's something much more intricate exceeds our mundane reasoning methods... I say

Well .. you're not trying to say that nothing scares you, huh? .. You gotta be kiddin us" He says .. I stare at nowhere and reconsider my following answer .. "Hmm .. I think I have a Taboo of my own" .. " You might think I'm crazy or something but……" "My reflection .. Sometimes it scares the hell out of me" .." Yeah .. I've always had that unjustified fear of my reflection in mirrors" .. " Sometimes I think how would it react if I turned my back to him" .. "Sometimes I intend to launch a sudden move to make sure my reflection would perform the same move" .. "I used to stand in front of my mirror for several minutes without a single respond of my side" .. "I know it could be all in my mind, but sometimes your mind turns to be your worst enemies" .. "Simply, My Reflection isn't mine" .. "He has a mind of his own" .... He Leaves in anger saying ; "This is bullshit,I just don't believe that" .. I glimpse his reflection in the wall mirror blinking at me .. Ever predictable

As I've mentioned earlier .. These are excerpts of my diaries .. Believe it or not .. But I've been a wild boy ..You can feel free to share us the thing that scares you the most .. anything .. Don't confine yourself

A message to the president

A message to the president
Translation

I do respect you,but it's too much

Master president ,Muhammad Husni Mubarak, the president of the Arab republic of Egypt, the land of the pharos. With my best regards and respect..I'd like to shed the light on few things which maybe you should reconsider.

I'm an ordinary guy, just like so many others who share me the inherited passion of this

country. And since We don't belong to any specific parties nor extremist movements, We believe to have the credibility to judge the current affairs occurring in our land,Egypt with an objective perspective.

We wonder why don't you come down into our simple life to share us our cares and our dream? Why did you toss us in the middle of the free market society with no protection or shield? We go after a Mirage which we realize to be a big lie ..why? We have lost the capability to dream of any thing any more .. our imagination to create have been ruined.

Master president, I'm projecting the light on few things that should be clarified for the good of the Egyptian people .. and I'm sure you're be wise enough to handle them properly

1- the administrative court rejection of 14 investors' application to establish new cement factories which led to the escalation of the cement ton's price from 150 LE to 400 and even exceeding that to 500 LE A ton?

2- The downsizing of cement factories to 14, which resulted in parching the local market . Accompanied with supplies disturbance regarding the fact that the government sells the local gas to these factories in low prices , then these factories exports it's share of this sustained natural gas abroad to preserve it's share in the international market.

3- The deteriorated state of the Egyptian mass media demonstrated in the incapability to get on with the world wide affairs .. the finest example that the first channel was broadcasting a show called (the best goals) while America was executing saddam!

4- An apathetic attitude towards the Egyptian people general health, represented in Agrioum factory in Domiat province which causes 10 different kinds of diseases . plus it contributes to the pollution of the Nile by using its water in its cooling system then it re drain it back into the Nile!!

5- The ambiguous attitude of the Egyptian foreign ministry affairs towards the caricatures offending our prophet Muhammad (PBUH) .. beside the late attempt to search Pope Shenoda in the british airport Heathrow

6- The upward pollution of the Great Nile because of the terrible amounts of garbage scattered along it's banks which represents 95% of the pure water resources in Egypt ..

7- The death of the Egyptian citizen Amal Ahmad due to a bitter fued struggling to buy bread!

8- A shortage in the general budget of the government estimated to be 88.1 billion LE .. the the possible solution according to the minister of finance is to sell the state's share of it's funds into the public sector companies

9- Loan's Interests in the general budget estimated to be 52.9 billion LE .. which have exhausted our budget to the extent that we're unable to fulfill our international debts

10- The myriad obstacles which face our scientific researches and the establishments of new companies .. Regarding the fact that in America a new company is established every 11 second.

11- People's abstaining to vote in any kind of primary .. the latest participated number in the late local primary didn't exceed 5% .. because people don't believe it would make any difference any more.

12- The death of two young men in the late Ma'ala's province affairs. They're 15 & 20 years old

13- There're 20 million people infected with Chronic viral hepatitis .. 12 million have diabetes .. 3.5 million are diagnosed as depressed

14- There're no active parties which can actually interact with the public and compete with the ruling party for the good of the Egyptian citizen .. The conflict in El wafd party … deterioration of Al ghad party .. while other stand still to watch what happens without lifting a finger

15- The amount of the foreign gushes are estimated to 10.4 billion Dollar which is so few when compared to the facilitations granted to the foreign investors!

16- The American sustaining to Egypt is a major mean of pressing the Egyptian government to submit to the American will .. no wonder America's suggestion of exporting the crisis of the Palestinians refuges to Sini

17- The average of the pollution which can be found in the atmosphere .. it's the highest level of pollution in the whole world

18- The sudden uprising cost of the agricultural fertilizers which might lead to escalate the cost of harvest ..regardless he fact how many Egyptians get cancer through these chemical prohibited fertilizers

19- The scandal of the corrupted blood bags which involved the council man Dr.Hani Serour
20- The upcoming Doctors strike on the 23th of April

21- Egypt is alleged to be enduring starvation .. why not and the latest battles in Kina province was due to buying bread

22- The intervene of foreign bodies in the internal affairs of Egypt .. 15 foundations of human rights have received 3 million LE to supervise the local elections.
23- The controversy regarding The law of the predial taxes
24- The emergence of bribes, managerial corruption and flexible Fatawa

25- The monopoly policy applied by Ahmad Ez who conquers the iron industry in Egypt, which resulted in the rising of the iron's ton from 150 LE to 6000 LE .Gold from 27 LE per single Gram to 150 LE

26- People's continuous attempts to employ their money which proves the failure of the government's policy in insurance field .. and the latest results is the swindler of Nasr city

27- The outbreak of crimes and robberies .. the state's authorities inability to confront such issues like fornication, murders and drugs addiction

28- The selling of famous banks like Alexandria and Cairo banks

29- "I swear to Allah that I'm a believer and testify that there's no god but Allah .. I testify that I swallowed this annihilator aerosol with my free will on 5th of March 2005 because I fed up with my life , there's nothing I can do .. take care of my daughter Aya and her mother" .. A suicide note written by an Egyptian citizen Muhammad fathi mahmoud 39 years old

30- The dangerous threatens that face the industry of sugar in Egypt due to the presidential decisions regarding this issue .. and the back draw of the plantation of the Egyptian cotton

31- The exportation of natural gas to both Israel and spain despite the continuous warnings concerning the fact that Egyptian gas won't be sufficient to supply the local market needs over the upcoming 20 decades at most

32- The multiple cost of Mazot … The Death building in Alexandria which collapsed causing 35 deaths

33- The government's inability to face the bird flu virus

34- The rising costs of the essential alimental items and the plight of the bread

35- The ship of death which went down the red sea bringing more than 1000 deaths

36- The rising prices of red meat which seems to be hard to reach for the Egyptian citizen, and if case he managed to buy it it come out to be a donkeys flesh

Master president,in your 4th of may birthday and mine 15th of April, I don't call for a peaceful strike or any thing else .. all what I ask for is a time to ponder, reconsider the current state of the Egyptian people .. And in the same time I'll take my time to re arrange my papers and collect my thoughts, in fear of mentioning something contradicting reality ..coz im not an angel nor a prophet .. im a human just like you .. we both are exposed to committing mistakes .. and im pretty sure that it’s a matter of misunderstood, since the kind of informations you get is generally projected on the annual expenditure on cell phones 186 million LE , and the national economy growth to 8% .. after all that I can't figure out a reasonable reason to neglect our reality and instead you care for El haddary's crisis .. come back to your people please, coz we really need you .. Thanks to patience Allah has granted to us .. 6th of April is the first step , and 4th of May is an invitation to think .. time has come to change your source of information .. coz I respect you, but I've had enough
